THE LADY VANISHES (96 minutes) PG

Alfred Hitchcock's 1938 thriller has a perfect premise: an elderly woman (May Whitty) disappears from a train hurtling through central Europe, and only the young heroine (Margaret Lockwood) seems to recall she ever existed. Lido, Classic and Cameo, Sunday, August 5, 4pm.

The Marx Brothers are up to their usual mischief in this 1937 vehicle, which contains a degree of padding but also some immortal sequences, most notably the extended bit where Groucho, as Dr Hugo Z. Astor, Sunday, August 5, 7pm. Double bill with A Night at the Opera.

Digitally projected. Thornbury Picture House, Saturday, August 4, 4.30pm.

LOST GULLY ROAD (80 minutes) CTC

The second feature from local independent Donna McCrae (Johnny Ghost) is a contained, finely-crafted horror-thriller that has the assurance to take its time – keeping us closely aligned with the the solitary heroine (Adele Perovic) who finds her anxiety levels rising when a difficult personal situation sends her out to a cottage in the bush. Cinema Nova, Saturday, August 4, 11pm, and Sunday, August 5, 9pm.

The Marx Brothers in A Day at the Races.

Human video-game avatar Tom Cruise is back on the job as the star of Hollywood's best current action-adventure series, in which the globetrotting adventures of the Impossible Mission Force provide an alibi for stunts and digital transformations alike.
