The Reason Many 'Teen Mom' Fans Feel Sorry for Farrah Abraham

Thanks to MTV’s Teen Mom, viewers have had the chance to watch everyday teens go through the trials and tribulations of pregnancy — and we’ve also gotten to watch them navigate adulthood as their kids grow up, too. While Farrah Abraham may have been fired from the show, viewers still remember her as one of the most controversial figures to ever appear on the network. From her tumultuous relationship with her mother to the controversial choices she’s made for her 9-year-old daughter, Farrah’s proved she’s one of the most polarizing TV personalities ever.

While many fans of the show have noted how much they dislike Farrah, others actually feel sorry for her. Here’s why she’s getting sympathy from some viewers.

The father of Farrah’s daughter died when she was pregnant

It’s not everyday that Farrah shows her soft side, as she typically prides herself on her independence, toughness, and ability to get the ball rolling on her business ventures. But she has spoken candidly about the loss of her daughter’s father, Derek Underwood.

E! Online notes Derek was killed when he lost control of his car while driving and hit a utility pole on Dec. 28, 2008. Though his blood-alcohol level was below the legal limit, it was determined that there was alcohol involved at the time. Farrah was eight months pregnant with Sophia, though she hadn’t seen Derek since she hit the five-months mark. The two broke up, and according to Farrah, Derek and her father also had an altercation involving the police.

While Farrah and Derek’s relationship may not have ended on a high note, the publication explains she still makes sure Sophia knows who her father was. Derek’s step-mother has also said that Farrah is a good mother to Sophia, as she brings her daughter to visit Derek’s grave once a year and takes Sophia over to Derek’s family’s home for visits.

Farrah’s mother has also reportedly been abusive

We’ve seen the difficult relationship Farrah has had with her mother — but once fans learned the back story of why Farrah treats her mom the way she does, they felt sorry for the star. People reports back in 2010, Farrah’s mother, Debra, was arrested on suspicion of abuse after she got into an argument with Farrah over Sophia’s childcare. Debra allegedly grabbed Farrah’s throat during the heated fight and then struck her. Farrah ultimately dropped the charges — but mentally, it seems she’s never forgiven her mother for that incident.

Farrah has also accused her mother of skipping out on family therapy to be with her boyfriend at the time. And Debra has also accused Farrah of various abuses in the past.

Farrah has shown rare moments of tenderness throughout the show

From her over-the-top Instagram videos to her difficult TV personality, there aren’t many tender moments of Farrah shown by MTV. Even so, we’re all human — and she’s had a few moments that reminded viewers of this. In Touch Weekly reminds us of the time on Teen Mom when she took her daughter, Sophia, to visit Derek’s grave. Sophia then began chanting, “I want a daddy! I want a daddy now! … I want to die!” And to this, Farrah cried while telling her daughter it made her sad to hear that.

Farrah has also shared a few touching moments on Instagram. In one such post, her and Sophia shared a tribute to Derek. Farrah also had well wishes for all viewers who lost a loved one around the holidays. E! News also notes that in her memoir, My Teenage Dream Ended, she calls Derek “my first love, my only true love. Now Derek was gone forever, and so was my happy ending.”
