Strictly’s Paralympic star Lauren Steadman has secret advantage over rivals

Strictly’s Lauren Steadman has an advantage when it comes to the salsa – because she teaches it.

The Paralympic silver medallist got hooked on it as an escape from training.

In May 2017 she said: "I like to dance salsa – I’ve been doing it for about four years and I teach now as well.

"I got into it because my psychologist said that sport is no longer your hobby it’s your career, so you need something outside of that to enjoy.

"I gave it a try and the rest is history!"

Lauren was born missing her lower right arm and is also a double World Champion Paratriathlete and six times European Champion.

She took part at both the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing and the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, where she performed as a swimmer.

After that, she switched to the paratriathlon.

The 25-year-old star, who lives in Portsmouth, will join a host of big names, including Susannah Constantine, Lee Ryan and Katie Piper, when the BBC’s series kick-starts.

She is not the first on Strictly to know some steps _ before the show. In 2017 alone, Aston Merrygold , Alexandra Burke and Mollie King were all experienced in some ways.

A spokesman for Lauren said: “She has salsa danced socially for several years and on occasion, due to shortages of teachers, she has helped beginners.

“She’s not formally trained or qualified. She does it because she loves it!”

The double World Champion and six-time European champion has a host of medals to her name – 20 gold and six silver, to be precise.
