Selena Gomez's Latest Movie May Never Hit Theaters and This Is Why

Selena Gomez’s controversial Woody Allen movie, A Rainy Day in New York, may never see the light of day.

For context, Allen was accused of sexual assault by his own adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow in 2014. In a New York Times article, she claimed he sexually abused her when she was only seven years old. Allen continued to make films and work in Hollywood after the allegations came to light, and celebrities (including Gomez) worked with him despite this.

A Rainy Day in New York wrapped filming this past fall, before the #MeToo movement really gained steam and became what it is today, shining a spotlight on the past allegations against Allen. Amazon bought the film and slated it for release in 2018, but according to sources who spoke with Page Six, it no longer has a release date. “No release date has ever been set for the film,” a source said.

The film stars Gomez along with Timothée Chalamet, Jude Law, and Elle Fanning. It was controversial from the get-go after it was reported that the plot involved Law having sex with Fanning’s character, who is fifteen in the movie.

Some of the actors donated their salaries to the Time’s Up movement and other charities in response to the controversy. Chalamet was one of them.

“I don’t want to profit from my work on the film,” he said, “and to that end, I am going to donate my entire salary to three charities. I want to be worthy of standing shoulder to shoulder with the brave artists who are fighting for all people to be treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.”

Gomez, however, totally dodged questions about the allegations against Allen.

“To be honest, I’m not sure how to answer — not because I’m trying to back away from it,” she said in an interview. “[The Harvey Weinstein allegations] actually happened right after I had started [on the movie]. They popped up in the midst of it. And that’s something, yes, I had to face and discuss. I stepped back and thought, ‘Wow, the universe works in interesting ways.’”
