Scariest horror movies and shows on Netflix – from Don't Breathe and Veronica to The Open House and The Gallows

But, what's currently available to stream on the service and have they added any for Halloween? Let's find out…

Don't Breathe on Netflix

The terrifying new horror film "that would make Hitchcock proud" has been released on Netflix.

Don't Breathe follows three friends as they try to rob a blind man before things take a sinister turn and the trio get trapped in his house.

Its synopsis reads: "Rocky, a young woman wanting to start a better life for her and her sister, agrees to take part in the robbery of a house owned by a wealthy blind man with her boyfriend Money and their friend Alex.

"But when the blind man turns out to be a more ruthless adversary than he seems, the group must find a way to escape his home before they become his latest victims."

The thriller is so tense, it's said to be scarier than Netflix's Veronica, which is based on a true story and is so terrifying viewers can't make it to the end.

Critic Laura Kern said: "Creating true crawl-under-the-seat, palm-piercing, cover-your-eyes tension is a rare, undervalued cinematic art.

"There’s certainly no shortage of filmmakers who give it a try, but only a select few would make Hitchcock proud…

"Though relatively new to the game, Fede Alvarez is already one of those select few, quickly proving himself a standout master of suspense."

The horror stars Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto, and Stephen Lang.

Veronica on Netflix

Veronica is Netflix's newest horror film, and it's been dubbed the "scariest movie" ever.

It's based on a true story, and is directed by Paco Plaza.

Veronica tells the story of a young girl called Veronica and her siblings who try and summon their dead father's spirit using a Ouija board.

However, things take a dark turn when Veronica passes out during the ritual. From that moment on she starts to notice supernatural and spooky goings on that escalate over a three day period.

It's based on a file from the Madrid police force in which a girl mysteriously died after dabbling with the occult in the early 90s.

Writing on Twitter, spooked viewers wrote: "Veronica on Netflix is so goddamn creepy and terrifying that I refuse to finish it without daylight #veronica.

"i scared the s**t out of myself watching that damn veronica movie, i can usually watch scary movies and be okay but nah fam i don’t even wanna sleep now ?."

"It's called Veronica .. Omg I left it on I'm terrified this is so scary it's almost over."
