Saturday Night Live kicks off its new season with Star Wars favourite as host

Saturday Night Live took advantage of its Weekend Update anchors hosting this year’s Emmy Awards to announce its first host of the season.

The NBC sketch show usually announces its first batch of hosts much earlier — often at the end of August or very early September — but this year waited until less than two weeks before the show returns on September 29.

That’s because NBC had the primo opportunity of Weekend Update anchors Michael Che and Colin Jost zinging the biggest shows on TV from the Emmys stage on Monday night (September 17).

A few hours before the big show, SNL‘s social media accounts confirmed that Star Wars favourite Adam Driver will be returning to the show to host the series premiere, with Kanye West back on stage at Studio 8H for his sixth time as musical guest.

The last time he was on Saturday Night Live, Driver gave us the all-time classic sketch spoofing Star Wars, in which Kylo Ren starred in an episode of Undercover Boss on the Starkiller Base.

Driver will be hosting the season 44 premiere to promote the award season push for BlacKkKlansman, but we’re sure he’ll get in at least a few Star Wars jokes before the night is through.

It’s been an eventful summer even with SNL off the air! At the Creative Arts Emmy Awards earlier this month, Tiffany Haddish won the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series Award for her hosting appearance on SNL.

One cast member has also made some news, when Pete Davidson got engaged to frequent SNL guest Ariana Grande after actually meeting her on the show. That’ll probably come up on-air at some point…

Saturday Night Live returns on Saturday, September 29 on NBC at 11.30pm ET in the US.
