Piers Morgan tells Richard Arnold 'I bet you've had a few big birds' and claims Susanna is a virgin as Good Morning Britain feature debate on 'gay' muppets Bert and Ernie

He spoke out after Sesame Street released a statement that denied the beloved Muppets are a couple – after its scriptwriter Mark Saltzman said that they are.

The 53-year-old host said: "I’m not having it. They are clearly gay. I watched Sesame Street".

Piers relished the opportunity to take aim at his co-hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Arnold during the segment.

He said to the hosts: "Is there now going to be a statement about Miss Piggy and Kermit?

"Was Kermit gender fluid after all? Was the marriage ever consummated? If not, was it a real marriage? We need to know these things."

When Richard replied: "I wonder if any of the Muppets are strangely drawn to Big Bird."

Piers sniped back: "I bet you've had a few big birds in your time."

He then explained the concept of marriage to single Susanna, 47, and said: "When you get married you have sex. Most people do. Is that why you've never got married?"

In their original statement, Sesame Street wrote: "As we have always said, Bert and Ernie are best friends.

"They were created to teach pre-schoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves"

"Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation."

It came after Scriptwriter Mark Saltzman said that the co-habiting characters are based on his relationship with his partner Arnold Glassman, in an interview with Queerty.

He said: "I always felt that without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert & Ernie, they were. I didn’t have any other way to contextualise them.”
