Piers Morgan takes a swipe at Susanna Reid's love life as she wears a surgical mask to avoid his germs

The anchors made viewers laugh when 53-year-old Piers returned to the ITV show on Monday morning and coughed and spluttered his way through the first two hours.

Susanna, 47, took precautions and made sure that she was protected against his germs, as Piers said that he was still "infected".

He kicked off the show and said: "Well good morning Britain, it's just gone 6am, I've got a stinking cold, I'm in the remnants stage of infection.

"Thursday and Friday were bad, Saturday and Sunday I was on the sofa not moving, being served by a team of servants of course. And this morning, I've got that sort of clammy feeling."

Charlotte Hawkins slid away in her chair, as Susanna recoiled and said: "Are you going to be sniffing and wiping your nose throughout the whole programme?

"You're just going to let it drip, do what toddlers do? It's going to be a rocky dangerous road this morning."

Piers took his chance to poke fun at Susanna after she slipped on her mask, and said: "You should wear that all the time. It might help you on the dating circuit."

However, she shot back: “Actually things are going perfectly well.”

Fans loved Susanna for taking action, as one said: "@susannareid100 I love you Susanna, you've made me laugh this morning with you wearing a surgeons green mask, to Piers cold. Always loves your humour on gmb.

"Have a fabulous day beautiful lady." Another person wrote: "Better to put the mask on Piers!"

Piers became ill just days after his son Spencer was rushed to hospital after being bitten by a spider in Antigua.

The newsman's eldest son, 25, spent a week under the care of doctors amid fears he was suffering from sepsis.

Piers, 53, shared a picture of Spencer lying in a hospital bed in Turkey, revealing he had fallen sick from a bite he got during the family's recent holiday in Antigua.

The Good Morning Britain host thanked doctors for looking after his boy and said he's now on the road to recovery.

He wrote: "One small spider bite in Antigua.. led to one long week of near-Sepsis hell in Turkey.

"Many thanks to all the brilliant staff at Letoon Hospital in Fethiye for taking care of my eldest son @spencer__morgan so well. Thankfully now on road to recovery."
