Piers Morgan "feels sorry" for Celebrity Big Brother's Roxanne Pallett and brands the reaction a "witch hunt"

We’re not entirely sure having Piers Morgan backing your corner is a good thing, but the broadcaster and perennial provocateur has spoken out in defence of Roxanne Pallett anyway.

Commenting on the fallout from Roxanne’s Celebrity Big Brother appearance, Piers told The Sun that he “feels sorry” for the actress and the backlash that’s surrounded her exit.

Although the Good Morning Britain presenter admitted he thought Roxanne had played punch-gate “very badly”, Piers called the public’s response to the incident “brutal”.

“I think she knows how badly she played it and I think the scale of abuse she’s now getting is beginning to get a bit much. People should calm down. She had to leave that show.

“She’s lost her pantomime gig, she’s lost her radio show,” he explained. “Everyone just wants to wipe down and extinguish and it’s got a bit brutal.”

The ever-controversial Piers went on to say that he and Roxanne had been exchanging texts and that he had advised her to “go away” and “come back and start again”.

“In the end it’s a TV show,” Piers said of CBB. “What she did was not smart and she knows it and I’m beginning to feel a bit sorry for her. I think it’s now become a witch hunt.”

Unsurprisingly, Piers also weighed in on Roxanne’s post-exit interviews with both Jeremy Vine and Emma Willis, suggesting there was nothing more she could have done.

“It’s become a TV crucifixion. At some point you’ve got to say, ‘She’s apologised, she knows she made a terrible mistake, it’s been disastrous for her and her career’,” he affirmed.

Roxanne has since apologised for the accusations she made against fellow CBB housemate Ryan Thomas, saying that she had “got it wrong” and was “devastated” by the situation.

Celebrity Big Brother aired on Channel 5. Big Brother 19 returns this Friday (September 14) at 9pm on Channel 5.
