Phillip Schofield surprises This Morning viewers as he unbuttons his shirt live on air to reveal the gender of a couples unborn baby

However the 56-year-old wasn't pretending to be in the Full Monty or anything like that, and instead was helping surprise a couple who are expecting a baby.

Three couples were in the studio to take part in a gender reveal segment, with each pair finding out whether their baby is going to be a boy or a girl in different ways.

The first found out the were having a girl by Phil cutting a cake, revealing a pink sponge inside.

The second discovered they were also having a girl – despite the mum-to-be hoping for a boy – after Phil and co-host Rochelle Humes popped a giant balloon and released pink confetti.

The third couple are expecting their third child, having already had two daughters together.

They revealed they were hoping for a boy to complete their family, but when Phil and Rochelle pulled the confetti cannons, silver foil came out.

As they looked confused, Phil said: "Well the thing is, your decision has been pretty much around you all morning.

"Certainly with me, I knew the decision when I put my show clothes on this morning."

As Phil started to unbutton his shirt, he apologised to the sound department and then said: "Can I just say we had to put a really dodgy V-neck on so you couldn't see it above my shirt."

Then he whipped open his shirt and revealed the pale blue T-shirt underneath, confirming that the couple were having their longed for son.

As they celebrated, the camera panned round to show the This Morning crew also had pale blue tops on under their jackets while Vanessa Feltz, who was helping with the segment, had a T-shirt with 'It's a boy!' written across her chest under her top.

Viewers loved the surprise, with one writing on Twitter: "Genuinely thought it all went wrong there, great trick @schofe and @RochelleHumes."

Another shared: "Omg. This gender reveal made me cry!!! I loved this set. Amazing. @thismorning @Schofe this is why I love this show #genderreveal."

A third agreed, tweeting: "I LOVE Phillip that was brilliant! #ThisMorning."
