Major Garrett has been named CBS News’ chief Washington correspondent, and is expected to expand his reporting inside the Beltway and enterprise reporting outside of D.C. The new title puts Garrett in place for 2020 coverage.
The announcement was made today by Christopher Isham, Vice President and Washington Bureau Chief for CBS News.
Garrett will continue to appear on all CBS broadcasts and platforms, including CBS This Morning, the CBS Evening News, and the CBSN streaming service.
Since 2012, Garrett has been CBS’ chief White House correspondent. He’s hosted the weekly multi-platform podcast The Takeout since its launch last year.
“I have been honored to travel the country and the world covering the White House for CBS News,” said Garrett, “and I am eager to see where that privilege and responsibility takes me next. The White House and Washington will remain a focus, and change is coming to both. Each national campaign also creates pathways to stories beyond the day-to-day horse race. I look forward each and every day to working with the exceptional team of journalists at CBS News.”
As the chief White House correspondent, Garrett has covered both the Obama and Trump administrations, and during the past six months has traveled to the Helsinki Summit and the G-20 summit. He was also part of CBS News’ coverage of Trump’s summit in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jung Un.

Prior to joining CBS News, Garrett was a regular contributor for the network, and before that served eight years at Fox News in several roles, finishing as senior White House correspondent.
