“The Walking Dead” is getting a “Pokemon Go”-style mobile game. AMC and Next Games have teamed up to release the new game called “The Walking Dead: Our World”, which is a location-based augmented-reality experience that will allow fans to battle the walkers on mobile devices.
Like the hit Niantic-developed game, the upcoming AR game will blend its fictional characters, from zombies to fan-favorite protagonists Rick, Daryl and Michonne, with everyday locations like a convenience store or a local park. It will feature a variety of ways to do away with zombies including grenades, the Katana and guns.
In AMC’s words, the game “will enable players to fully immerse themselves into the action of the hit TV show by blending digital objects, such as characters and other game elements, with the players’ own environment.”
The game is developed by Finnish studio Next Games, the same team behind mobile strategy game “The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land”, which is claimed to have been downloaded more than 16 million times.
Mikael Achren, creative director at developer Next Games, says during the demo, “With ‘The Walking Dead’, you’re always wondering what the world would be line in your location. I always wonder what the world would be in Helsinki. It’s one of the biggest questions fans of the show have. This will give you insight into what is happening in your own neighborhood.”
Next CEO Teemu Huuhtanen also says in a statement, “The fans love how the show encourages you to ask, ‘What would I do in a zombie apocalypse?’, and in this game we aim to let players explore this hypothetical in a way they’ve never experienced before. AR enables players to live through the fight for survival in a whole new way in their familiar surroundings.”
AMC and Next Game have released a trailer for “The Walking Dead: Our World”. The game will be available on iOS and Android devices, but no release date has been set yet.
“The Walking Dead” returns with the new season 8 on Sunday, October 22 on AMC.
