If you never watched Girls and somehow remain unaware that Lena Dunham is a longtime member of Taylor Swift‘s squad, you probably know, at the very least, that the actress is actually a pretty controversial celeb. The controversy surrounding LD reached its peak when she released her memoir, Not That Kind of Girl, where she revealed that she molested her younger sister as a child.
After dropping that bombshell, several people criticized the 32-year-old and her book, and if they weren’t coming at her for that, it was for something else like her racy Instagram photos or her politics. Although the actress has had shade thrown her way on several occasions, she’s managed to throw it right back. In fact, there are several celebs who’ve been at the center of a Lena Dunham diss throughout the years.
Justin Bieber
Justin Bieber has been getting criticized for his music ever since “One Time” was released in 2009, and when Lena Dunham noticed a particularly problematic lyric in one of his newer songs, she made sure to throw some shade his way.
In a poignant tweet aimed directly at JB, the Girls star wrote, “Let’s do away with pop songs where a girl nods yes when she means no and vice versa, k?”
This tweet clearly references rape culture in the United States, and more specially, the lyrics in JB’s tune, “What Do You Mean?” The lyrics go, “What do you mean / When you nod your head yes but you wanna say no,” and NGL, we totally understand where she was coming from with this one.
Kanye West
As we all know, Kanye West and Taylor Swift have been embroiled in a bitter feud for what feels like forever. Most recently, the two had an extremely public fallout over the song “Monster” and some of its degrading lyrics, which were about Tay herself.
As one of the “Delicate” singers absolute besties, it should come as no surprise that Lena couldn’t stomach the tune and its corresponding music video. In a lengthy Facebook post, the actress referred to the vid as “one of the more disturbing ‘artistic’ efforts in recent memory.” She also said that she can’t watch it because “it feels informed and inspired by the aspects of our culture that make women feel unsafe even in their own beds, in their own bodies.”
Rihanna
Despite constantly advocating for women’s rights, Lena actually came for Rihanna for being a bad example for little girls and, more specifically, getting back together with Chris Brown even though he physically abused her.
In an interview with Alec Baldwin on his talk show Here’s The Thing, the Girls star said, “Like, you know, she left Barbados, she’s had this amazing career, she’s won a Grammy… She’s talented. And then she gets back together with Chris Brown and posts a million pictures of them smoking marijuana together on a bed. And it cracks my heart in half in a way that makes me feel like I’m 95 years old.”
Calvin Harris
When it comes to BFF Taylor Swift, Lena will pretty much do anything to defend her. That’s why, during an interview on Watch What Happens Live, she took the opportunity to call out the singer’s worst boyfriend ever.
After being asked to reveal the worst BF while playing a game of Plead the Fifth, LD. didn’t hesitate. She said, “I want to do right by her on this question. My least favorite was Calvin Harris because he was petty in public, and who needs to do that?” Well, there you have it, folks!
Daniel Tosh
On that same episode of WWHL, host Andy Cohen asked Lena to reveal who she thinks is the biggest misogynist in Hollywood. In true LD fashion, she prefaced her answer by saying it was a tough question because “there’s so many.” Ultimately, though, she settled on comedian Daniel Tosh.
The Lenny Letter founder said, “This isn’t a person who has like a ton of power, but the small amount he has, I feel he has used for ill and that’s Daniel Tosh. He said a really unkind thing about my breasts but he said it in a context in which I felt like he was shutting down a lot of women for having bodies he didn’t consider to be normative.”
If her accusations are true, we don’t blame her for calling him out!
Odell Beckham Jr.
Lena was very insulted by the fact that New York Giants player Odell Beckham Jr. pretty much ignored her at the 2016 Met Gala, despite being seated at the same table.
The actress told Amy Schumer, “He looked at me and he determined I was not the shape of a woman by his standards. The vibe was very much like, ‘Do I want to f*ck it? Is it wearing a… yep, it’s wearing a tuxedo.'”
Lena was later criticized for this quote and eventually responded by saying, “I would never intentionally contribute to a long and often violent history of the over-sexualization of black male bodies — as well as false accusations by white women toward black men.”
When Odell was asked about the situation, he wasn’t sure what to say.”
“It’s life. There are so many things that go on, you catch some of them, you don’t catch some of them, you just — I don’t know man, I don’t have much to say about that. I have to learn more about the situation.”
Donald Trump
Ever since Donald Trump announced that he would be running for President, Lena Dunham hasn’t been shy about her hatred toward him. In fact, like many celebrities, she even said she’d move to Canada if he took office. Alas, DJT did become the leader of the United States, but no, the actress did not move away.
In response to haters criticizing her for her hypocrisy, the 32-year-old explained that she wasn’t going to move “because as horrifying as I found Donald Trump’s rhetoric, as hideous as I found his racism and xenophobia, as threatening to basic decency as I found his demagogue persona, I never truly believed he could win.” TBH, same.
Seth MacFarlane
Numerous women were unimpressed by the 2013 Oscars, especially thanks to Seth MacFarlane‘s musical number titled “We Saw Your Boobs.” As cringey as the performance was, though, Lena wanted to make sure people didn’t completely overlook the GOOD of the show.
LD tweeted, “Ladies: Anne Hathaway is a feminist and she has amazing teeth. Let’s save our bad attitudes for the ones who aren’t advancing the cause.”
But, in true Lena fashion, she had to give her two cents about the misogynistic performance by the comedian. She later added, “Hey ragers. ‘The ones who aren’t advancing the cause’ I mentioned aren’t always, or mostly, women. Case in point: I saw your boobs.”
