NY Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand stopped by Stephen Colbert’s Late Show Tuesday night to announced she was forming an exploratory committee to run for POTUS.
The announcement had been expected for days.
“There has been a lot of speculation why you are here tonight,” Colbert said, sticking to script. “I’m just curious, do you have anything you would like to announce?”
“Yes,” she said, grasping his hands on cue.
“I’m filing an exploratory committee for President of the United States — tonight!”
Colbert thanked her for making the announcement on his CBS late-night show, saying “I’m honored you are here” then asked why she wanted to be POTUS.
Gillibrand began, nervously, to deliver her prepared talking points:
“I’m going to run for President of United States because, as a young mom, I’m going to fight for other people’s kids as hard as I would fight for my own,” she began to speechify.
“Which is why I believe that health care should be a right and not a privilege.”
“Why I believe we should have better public schools for our kids, because it shouldn’t matter what block you grow up on.”
“And I believe anybody who wants to work hard enough should be able to get whatever job training they need to earn their way into the middle class.”
“But, you are never going to accomplish any of these things if you don’t take on the systems of power that make all of it impossible,” she continued, getting down to campaign speech.
“Which is, taking on institutional racism,taking on corruption and greed in Washington, taking on the special interests that write legislation in the dead of the night. And I know I have the compassion and the courage and the fearless determination to get that done.”
