Frances de la Tour, also Frances J. de Lautour, 73, was born July 30, 1944 and is an English actress.

She is best known for her role as Miss Ruth Jones in the 70s show Rising Damp from 1974 until 1978.

The actress' other TV work includes Emma Porlock in the Dennis Potter's Cold Lazarus (1996), Headmistress Margaret Baron in BBC sitcom Big School and Violet Crosby in Vicious.

Frances has returned to TV as Miss Matilda Crawley in new ITV period drama Vanity Fair.

She is also known for her theatre work and is a Tony Award winner and three-time Olivier Award winner.

Her brother is Andy de La Tour who is also an actor who starred in Notting Hill.
