Hollyoaks' Cleo McQueen suffers "heartbreaking" setback ahead of her wedding to Joel Dexter

It should be one of the happiest times of her life, but Cleo McQueen found herself struggling with her physical and mental health more than ever in today’s (October 8) first-look Hollyoaks.

Ahead of her wedding to Joel Dexter – that she will no longer be sharing with Mercedes and Russ – Cleo suffered a setback with her bulimia after receiving an unexpected gift.

After opening a letter from Pete Buchanan congratulating her on her engagement, Cleo took a turn for the worse and was discovered bingeing by Joel.

Despite her insistence that she was “happy and healthy” to her fiancé, fans were left heartbroken as they watched Cleo taunt herself over her appearance and relationship.

“Cleo’s actually breaking my heart,” one viewer wrote on Twitter, while another agreed she deserved her “happy ending”.

Commending Nadine Rose Mulkerrin for her portrayal of such a sensitive and complex issue, another fan commented: “Any storyline she has been given she has always blown me away.”

Cleo and Joel’s wedding will air as part of Hollyoaks‘ special episode for World Mental Health Day, with Nadine promising an “amazing” approach to the big day.

Revealing that the episode will show Cleo’s wedding day from different perspectives, Nadine said: “There’s three versions of the story that Cleo tells. She’s totally in denial, really.”
