Hollyoaks boss explains why the show moved the Nightingales out of The Dog

Hollyoaks local The Dog In The Pond recently ushered in a new era with the McQueen family, but aside from the inevitable chaos she brings, just why did the soap make Mercedes the new landlady?

Fortunately, the soap’s boss has revealed all to Digital Spy and other media at a press event yesterday (October 18), explaining that the Nightingales had essentially run their course. (Sorry, Marnie. You tried.)

The reason, it seems, ties in with Jennifer Metcalfe’s return as Mercedes McQueen, as Hollyoaks writers knew the fan favourite would bring a reign of “fun and chaos” to The Dog.

“We love the Nightingales, it’s clear to see from how much we’ve celebrated them, but there were diminished numbers of them so we wanted to reboot the pub as a centre point of the show,” DS was told.

“We wanted to put Mercedes in there with Nana, with Goldie, Cleo, and Myra as the cleaner! It’s a place that we love to go to. There’ll be years of fun and chaos to come there”.

The McQueen family recently took over from the Nightingales, who had been in charge since 2015, and wasted no time in completely tearing apart the class and sophistication Marnie had been at pains to add to the much-loved venue.

Teasing Mercedes’ reign as landlady, Jennifer Metcalfe recently admitted that the McQueens will run the pub in a totally different way to Marnie and the Nightingale family.

“They’re just going to make up their own rules as they go along. They want to make The Dog a proper good night out for their customers, and a McQueen night out is wild!” Jennifer joked.

“It’s definitely not what Marnie would have wanted.”

Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
