Great British Bake Off viewers notice an editing gaffe that appeared to give away the result

The Great British Bake Off did something it’s only ever done once before in its eight-year history last night (September 18) and ended the episode by sending absolutely no-one home.

Bake Off fan-favourite Terry missed last night’s show due to illness, and it was then announced that, with the agreement of everyone, he would be able to move on to next week’s show despite missing Dessert Week.

There were a few grumbles about whether or not that was the right thing to do on social media, but judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith were, as always, a few steps ahead and made the decision to save all the bakers, explaining that it wasn’t fair to send someone home with Terry not there.

But that didn’t come as a surprise to the more eagle-eyed Bake Off viewers among us, as an editing gaffe in the middle of the showstopper round appeared to show the moment when all the bakers had just been told they were safe.

Although how anyone could focus on anything that wasn’t chocolate at that point is beyond us.

The blunder in question came just after Paul and Prue had finished judging Rahul’s showstopper, and while Rahul was backing away from the judging table, the scene quickly shifted to a clip of the bakers sat in their end-of-episode line-up as they jumped up in relief and host Sandi Toksvig and Paul went to hug them.

Needless to say, those who spotted it were quick to share the mistake online, just because they could:

Still, at least it was a kind of ambiguous editing mix-up that had a few people believing that Briony was about to be sent home, so it didn’t outright spoil the result like a certain judge with a certain tweet last year.

With all the bakers through to next week’s Spice Week, Bake Off could be about to see its first ever double elimination to make up for this week’s free pass – so enjoy the relief while you still can, because next week may just prove to be twice as devastating.

The Great British Bake Off continues on Tuesday (September 25) at 8pm on Channel 4.
