Great British Bake Off fans demand Mary Berry's return as they slam Prue Leith's 'savage' putdown

Mary, 83, quit in 2016 after it was revealed BBC's Bake Off would be moving to Channel 4.

Last night her replacement Prue's prickly comment to Ruby Bhogal caused outrage during the showstopper judging.

After half of Ruby's chocolate sphere melted before the challenge was complete, the Bake Off star was forced to present a cracked dessert.

And it didn't go unnoticed by Prue, who asked her: "Do you understand the word sphere?"

Taken aback by the comment, Ruby tried to explain herself by saying: "What happened was, it had shattered into so many pieces so I had to do a bit of a jigsaw to try and have something."

Prue then went on to criticise the dessert's "thick walls" and described it as "sickly".

It infuriated fans who started calling on Mary to come back.

One said: "Mary Berry would never in a million years say 'Do you understand the word sphere?' to an already sad contestant. Prue is so mean #GBBO."

Another said: ‏“Do you understand the word sphere? Mary Berry wouldn’t have this kind of attitude #gbbo."

Someone else added: "Bring back Mary Berry plz #GBBO."

Another said: "Prue will simply never be as good as Mary Berry #GBBO #GBBO2018 #MaryBerryForever."

Prue caused controversy last year when she accidentally spoiled the result of the final 12 hours before it had aired.

The judge congratulated the winner while on holiday in Bhutan, blaming the time difference for the reason she "f***ed up".

Last night she and fellow judge Paul Hollywood chose not to send anyone home.

Retired air steward Terry had been forced to miss out on competing because of illness, so the judges felt it was unfair for someone to go home this week.

The show was criticised online as viewers complained an editing glitch "ruined" the episode's ending midway through.
