First look at Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip in The Crown season three

Netflix’s The Crown has become one of the streaming site’s most popular shows, taking viewers back in time for a look behind the doors of Buckingham Palace.

The award-winning drama follows Queen Elizabeth II throughout her reign so far, placing a special focus on her romances and political rivalries.

Since it first aired in 2016, the show has boasted a star-studded cast which featured the likes of Claire Foy , Matt Smith , Vanessa Kirby and John Lithgow.

But when it returns for season three this will all change, as a new ensemble of actors and actresses step in to play older versions of the Royal Family members.

And fans of the show have just been treated to a special first look at the newly recast Prince Philip .

Originally portrayed in the programme by Doctor Who star Matt Smith, the role of the Duke of Edinburgh will now be taken over by Tobias Menzies.

Tobias is known for his work on Outlander, Game of Thrones , Casino Royale, Rome, Black Mirror and Casualty.

Avengers star Paul Bettany was originally up for the role, but was forced to back out due to a scheduling conflict.

However Twitter users are particularly thrilled with the first look at Philip and can’t wait to see what Tobias brings to the show.

One user said: "It’s a big YES! from me."

Another wrote: "HE’S PERFECT."

A third commented: "He looks perfect, and you nailed this casting. Can’t wait to see him on-screen!"

Matt Smith is also a big fan of his replacement, telling Gold Derby in an interview he thought it was a "brilliant bit of casting".

Tobias will be joined in the new season, by Broadchurch actress Olivia Colman, who will be replacing Claire Foy as The Queen.
