Emmerdale star Claire King reveals how long she kept Kim Tate's return a secret for

Emmerdale star Claire King has admitted that she found it tough keeping Kim Tate’s return a secret.

The soap icon is heading back to the Dales for a week-long return stint, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos in her wake.

Upcoming scenes will see Kim make her much-anticipated return after 20 years away, when she turns up as part of the village’s big masquerade ball.

Speaking about how long she’s had to keep the news under wraps, Claire said: “It’s been mentioned over the last 20 years, obviously, but it wasn’t really until I’d left Corrie really. Then I had to wait until things settled down a bit with that – you need a bit of time between.

“I’ve known for quite a long time, though – about a year. It’s been really hard not telling anybody at all. I did tell my mum, dad and partner, but that’s it.

“It was weird as I had to park in the back lot where all the trucks are parked. It was all false noses and I remember thinking, ‘This is ridiculous’. It was really difficult at the time, but everyone did a really brilliant job at keeping it quiet.”

Well, most people anyway. Despite Kim’s return being in the pipeline for a year, a continuity announcer for ITV actually let the news slip just hours before it was due to be announced.

Discussing the blunder, Claire said: “Luckily it was only two hours before. The reaction has been lovely, seeing as half of them [people on Twitter] weren’t even born when I was on it before.

“Fans from other shows I’ve been in, like Bad Girls and Corrie, have come along and followed it as well, which is lovely.”

Emmerdale launches Kim’s return week on Monday, October 8 at 7pm on ITV.
