Doctor Who's Mandip Gill reveals deleted scene cut from episode 1 'The Woman Who Fell to Earth'

Doctor Who‘s new series got off to a fantastic start, as ‘The Woman Who Fell to Earth’ impressed critics and viewers alike.

Among Jodie Whittaker’s companions are Ryan (Tosin Cole) and Graham (Bradley Walsh), and they both had their share of emotional moments. Viewers don’t quite know Yaz (Mandip Gill) quite as well yet, but there was a scene that was cut that would have provided extra insight to her character.

The climax saw the Doctor outsmart the teeth-wearing Tzim-Sha, but Ryan’s grandmother Grace (Sharon D Clarke) also played a huge part, performing a heroic act in taking down the coils. Unfortunately, she was fatally injured in the process.

Speaking to Den of Geek, Gill explained what didn’t make the final edit, saying: “So there was a scene actually in which I perform – I tried to help Grace when she’s dying on the floor. So, with that scene in, you could see that Yaz was bothered, really affected by the death, I think.

“And obviously, you know when they’re in the town and she says, ‘How are you, Ryan’s nan?’.

“She’s obviously met Ryan’s nan [before]. She knows Ryan’s nan from years ago.”

Gill added that Yaz is affected seeing Ryan upset over Grace’s death, so perhaps we will see that in future episodes.

This week’s episode ‘The Ghost Monument’ sees the Doctor’s companions on an alien planet for the first time and under attack.

The end of the premiere also announced a whole host of upcoming guest stars, including former Coronation Street actress Shobna Gulati, Sex and the City‘s Chris Noth, and Broadchurch‘s Julie Hesmondhalgh, alongside the previously-announced Alan Cumming, Lee Mack, and Shaun Dooley.

Doctor Who returns with episode 2 – ‘The Ghost Monument’ – next Sunday, October 14 on BBC One.
