Denise Welch’s son apologised to her after battling heroin addiction

Denise Welch ’s son Matty Healy felt he needed to apologise to his mum, after battling heroin addiction.

The 1975 frontman went through rehab after spending four years smoking the drug “daily”, and wanted to reassure the Loose Women star.

“You can’t be a parent and have that kind of thing out there and not think, ‘Well, why didn’t I…’” he says in a new interview.

“You think it’s your fault. When it’s completely not.”

Having spoken open publicly about his battles, he says: “I just wanted to apologise to my mum.”

Matty, whose dad is Benidorm star Tim Healy, checked into rehab in Barbados on Halloween last year – “because it’s a long swim from London” – and has now stopped using the drug, as well as alcohol, though admits he still smokes weed.

Speaking in a new interview with Q magazine, he discusses how his bandmates wrote him emotional letters during his stay, and he now undergoes weekly drug tests and remains in therapy to help him stay clean.

The drug made him “a worse writer, person, friend, partner, son”, he says, and credits “horse therapy”, where he befriended a stallion called Favor, for helping him through his withdrawal.

“You don’t have to tell a horse to love itself,” he explains.

“They do what’s best for themselves. And they don’t judge themselves. They just do it. Because that’s what you’re supposed to do.”

Denise previously battled alcoholism, and has been teetotal for six years.
