DC's Birds of Prey star Mary Elizabeth Winstead teases Huntress's backstory

Fargo star Mary Elizabeth Winstead will be one of the ladies cleaning up the streets of Gotham City in the upcoming Worlds of DC movie Birds of Prey as Huntress, a character with an intriguing backstory.

Winstead was cast this week along with Underground star Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Huntress and Black Canary respectively to join Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn as a female-centric squad that patrols a Gotham that has been abandoned by Batman.

In DC Comics lore, Huntress is the heroic alter-ego of Helena Bertinelli, a one-time mafia family princess who turns against organised crime when her entire family is murdered.

Winstead is now dropping hints to TheWrap that live-action Birds of Prey director Cathy Yan has put an interesting spin on the origins of Huntress as she makes the jump to the big screen.

“It’s a really strong, kind of emotional place to start from for a superhero character,” she promised. “I won’t go into too much detail now, but I think it’s interesting and an opportunity to do something cool with this kind of character.”

A key hint that organised crime could play into Birds of Prey is that the movie is expected to feature Gotham City mob boss Black Mask in some capacity. For now, Winstead says she’s excited to be working on a female-focused entry in the comic book genre.

“Being with the other actresses and a female director and just the whole energy behind this is so unique, so I’m really happy about that,” she said.

The Cathy Yan-directed Birds of Prey will be fighting its way into cinemas on February 7, 2020.
