The CW Developing Erotic Novelist Comedy Based on Author Abby McDonald

The CW is developing a comedy based on novelist Abby McDonald, Variety has learned.

Part of the story will be inspired by McDonald’s real life experiences. Writing as Melody Grace, her self-published romance debut “Unbroken” hit the USA Today bestseller list in 2013, and her “Beachwood Bay” series has since become an international bestseller, scoring over 2 million downloads, and charting at #1 on iBooks around the world.

The series, titled “Bestseller,” will follow a risk-averse aspiring author who self-publishes an erotic novel under a pen name. It becomes a surprise best seller, complicating her work life and personal relationships, and inspiring her to act more boldly as she navigates her new double life.

McDonald is also the author of the cult YA thriller “Dangerous Girls” (as Abigail Haas), and adult titles “The Popularity Rules,” “The Liberation of Alice Love,” and “The Oxford Inheritance.” On the film side, she most recently penned the adaptation of the Nicole Kear memoir “Now You See Me,” from Tucker Tooley and Entertainment One.

McDonald will write and serve as an executive producer. Frank Marshall and Robert Zotnowski of The Kennedy/Marshall Company and Gary Unger of Exile Entertainment will executive produce. CBS Television Studios in association with Kennedy Marshall Company and Exile Entertainment

McDonald is repped by Paradigm, Ungar and Tanya Mallean of Skrzyniarz & Mallean. The Kennedy/Marshall Company is represented by CAA and attorney Alan Hergott.
