Corrie’s Kym Marsh drew on experience for tragic scenes of son Ryan’s ‘death’

Actress Kym Marsh has opened up about how she drew on her own experience as a mum for her upcoming traumatic scenes involving her two on-screen sons.

Michelle Connor will be inconsolable when Ryan is mowed down by drug dealer Ronan in explosive scenes airing next week.

The trio are involved in a dramatic car chase as Ronan is out for revenge following his son’s death. The chase comes to an abrupt end and a number of lives are on the line – including Ryan’s.

Teasing what viewers could expect Kym, who plays Michelle, said: “More tragedy, more trauma. Though it’s great for me because it really lets me test myself.”

The actress took part in a number of stunts herself – including the driving during the car chase.

“There was such a lot of screaming and shouting from me,” Kym laughed.

“It was great because I went back to my Wigan roots! But I kind of lost my voice by the time the night came any my throat was sore and it kept raining on and off.”

She added: “It was quite an intense period of time but it was great fun.”

Asked whether she drew on her own maternal instincts to get into the mindset, she said: “Absolutely, yeah. As you said, she is an absolute lioness with her cubs, as am I.

"I think as a mother you can’t help but have that instinct where you want to protect.

“But you know, obviously she just wants to protect Ryan, but Ali as well … she realises it’s her job to protect the boys. So yeah, I totally get it because I would be absolutely the same.”

She also teased that the scenes would have long-term repercussions.

Kym said: “This a shockwave that is going to continue to bounce for a long time – it’s not over after just these episodes.”

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
