Corrie fans horrified as main character is killed off-screen

Coronation Street fans were left horrified tonight as Archie Shuttleworth was killed… off-screen.

Archie, who was played by actor Roy Hudd, last appeared on the cobbles in 2010 for pal Blanche Hunt’s funeral.

Tonight on the ITV soap, Audrey Roberts received the distressing news that a dear friend had died.

As she appeared faint while holding the phone, friend Rita pulled her to one side and it was then that it was revealed Archie had died.

Funeral director Archie first appeared on the soap back in 2002 and was one of the few people who saw the good in friend Blanche.

However he began to make Blanche jealous when he grew close to Audrey, who helped him out by dressing some of his deceased clients.

After serial killer Richard Hillman tried to kill her Archie let her stay in his house.

Archie had been the only one who believed that Audrey was not losing her mind and that Richard had tried to kill her.

He eventually fell in love with Audrey, who let him down gently.

Archie left Weatherfield in 2003 but returned in 2006 for Mike Baldwin’s funeral and 2010 for Blanche’s.
