Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 6: Release date, episodes, cast and everything you need to know

Brooklyn Nine-Nine fans went on a rollercoaster of emotions in early May as the show was cancelled by Fox then resurrected barely a day after.

Given the outrage that surrounded the cancellation, it was likely that another network would take the chance to make themselves instant heroes and order a sixth season of the show and it wasn’t Hulu or Netflix in the end, but production company Universal TV’s sister network NBC.

“Ever since we sold this show to Fox I’ve regretted letting it get away, and it’s high time it came back to its rightful home,” said NBC Entertainment’s Chairman Robert Greenblatt. “Mike Schur, Dan Goor, and Andy Samberg grew up on NBC and we’re all thrilled that one of the smartest, funniest, and best cast comedies in a long time will take its place in our comedy line-up.”

Now that we’ve all settled down from the excitement, here’s everything we know so far about season six on NBC.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 6 release date: When’s it coming?

Unfortunately, even though every other season has premiered in mid-to-late September, NBC has confirmed that we’re going to have to wait until early 2019 for season six. An exact timeslot hasn’t been confirmed by NBC, but it could well take over co-creator Michael Schur’s other comedy The Good Place which airs on Thursday nights.

In the UK, it’s likely that E4 will just continue to air the show and usually UK fans have had to wait a few months to see new episodes. If that’s the case with season six, it might not air until summer 2019.

Filming started on the new season on August 20.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 6 episodes: How many can we expect?

Even though NBC rescued the show, it wasn’t without some (slight) bad news. It was confirmed that season six would only be 13 episodes long, compared to previous seasons which have always been 22 or 23 episodes long.

Later though, the network extended the episode order by five, from 13 to 18. Toit.

The initial worry was that the shortened episode run is because this season’s planned as a final outing to wrap up the stories of the characters, especially since Melissa Fumero wrote on Instagram after the renewal: “Thank you to NBC for giving us the opportunity to finish this special show!!”

However, Andy Samberg doesn’t believe season six will be the final run. “One hundred percent no,” he said confidently, but did add that he was “trying to being confident”. Still we’ll take that.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 6 cast: Who’s coming back?

The entire 99 will be back reporting for duty… with one exception.

Though she will appear in a handful of episodes, Chelsea Peretti is exiting the show this season as outrageous Gina Linetti. In a suitably Gina-esque statement on Twitter, Peretti wrote: “I won’t be doing a full season of Brooklyn Nine Nine in Season 6. But that doesn’t mean I won’t ever be back, winky face emoji, heart emoji.”

Indeed, she’s expected to continue to make guest appearances after departing as a series regular.

Everyone else is returning full-time, though: Andy Samberg (Jake Peralta), Stephanie Beatriz (Rosa Diaz), Terry Crews (Terry Jeffords), Melissa Fumero (Amy Santiago), Joe Lo Truglio (Charles Boyle), , Andre Braugher (Raymond Holt), Dirk Blocker (Michael Hitchcock) and Joel McKinnon Miller (Norm Scully).

Marc Evan Jackson, who plays Holt’s husband Kevin Cozner, isn’t technically a series regular, but there’s no way he won’t be back in season six either. And we love him anyway, so we’re including him.

Craig Robinson has also expressed his hopes that he’ll be back as Peralta’s best frenemy Doug Judy, the Pontiac Bandit. “Yes, I do think so,” he told Inverse. “It’s wishful thinking, but I hope so.” (Juddddyyyy!!!)

Aside from that, we could be seeing appearances from regular guest stars like Dean Winters (The Vulture), Jason Mantzoukas (Adrian Pimento) and Kyra Sedgwick (Madeline Wuntch), among others.

After its (brief) cancellation, a whole host of celebrities such as Mark Hamill, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Sean Astin shared their disappointment and urged the show to be picked up again, so Samberg has been joking that they’ll all appear on the new season.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 6 plot: What happened in the season 5 finale?

The season five finale centred on Jake and Amy’s wedding which eventually happened after a bomb threat derailed the original ceremony.

Elsewhere, Rosa seemed to take a shine to her ride-share driver Alicia (Gina Rodriguez) and later at Shaw’s, Holt was just about to read aloud the email that contained the verdict about whether or not he got the commissioner’s job. “Well, from the look on my face, I’m sure you can guess what it says,” he deadpanned.

And Dan Goor isn’t about to tell us what it said. “The answer is there. If you truly know Holt, you’ll know,” he teased, adding that he would confirm one thing about season six: “We will finally learn if ‘Kelly’ was Scully’s wife or his dog.”

One thing’s for sure though, season six won’t end on a cliffhanger like season five as Goor has learnt from the near-cancellation.

“We want to write a season finale that would be satisfying as a series finale and would also serve us well should we come back,” he explained. “We’ve learned we’ll never again do the kind of cliffhangers we did after seasons two, three and four because were we to be cancelled after those seasons, I think it would have been really disappointing for our fans.”

After Terry Crews came forward with his experiences of sexual assault, showrunner Dan Goor has revealed that there might be an episode in season six that is based on #MeToo, adding that serious issues need to “feel true to what the show is and still feel funny, but still give weight to the issue and explore it in a fair way”.

Andy Samberg added: “There’s a ton of stuff that would be incredible to do but we’re not going to do unless we have the right take that is doing it justice.”

There’ll also be a special Hitchock and Scully-focused episode, which may dig into the disastrous duo’s past.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 6 trailer: When will it arrive?

Not for a while yet, we’re afraid, but at least we have this great teaser about the show’s cancellation and then renewal.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine airs on Fox in the US (currently) and E4 in the UK.
