Big Brother kicked off its last-ever series on Channel 5 on Friday night (September 14), and there’s every sign that the reality show is taking things back to basics.
While it’s uncertain if Big Brother will continue on a different channel, host Emma Willis has at least promised that they’ll try to make this season the biggest and best ever.
And if the viewer reactions to this year’s line-up is anything to go by – including that of a certain show announcer – it seems this series will be ticking all the right boxes.
Tapping into fans’ nostalgia, one subtle touch Big Brother added this year was to inscribe quotes from classic housemates on the walls, including one from the iconic Nasty Nick, who featured in the very first series of the show.
It remains to be seen, however, if any of the new contestants will gain iconic status themselves.
One housemate that appeared to catch the eye of viewers was Cameron, an 18-year-old member of the Conservative Party who says he’d never vote for Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and is terrified of intimacy.
And another that was impossible to ignore was Lewis G, a self-proclaimed cocky individual who spent so long dancing and showing off on his way into the Big Brother house, he outran the music. It was also the first time he‘d seen his mum in three years.
Regardless of what the public think of the contestants, however, they won’t get to vote anyone out in the first week, as the show introduced an eviction twist.
At the end of the launch, it was revealed that the housemates will compete for ‘Big Coins’ – a currency introduced specifically for this series. The three contestants with the least amount of coins at the end of the week will be vulnerable to eviction.
Big Brother continues on Sunday night (September 16) at 10pm on Channel 5.
