TV legend Betty White proved that she can still delight a crowd when she made a surprise appearance at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards.
When the 96-year-old was introduced on stage by Alec Baldwin and Kate McKinnon, everyone erupted into applause and gave her a well-deserved standing ovation. The actress was celebrated for her career, which has spanned nearly eight decades, and she had those in attendance cracking up with her playful thank you speech.
“Somebody said something the other day about first lady of television, and I took it as a big compliment,” White told the crowd. “And then I heard her talking to her daughter a little later and she said, ‘first lady, she’s that old. She was the first one way back.’”
She continued, “It’s incredible that I’m still in this business and that you are still putting up with me. I am thanking you. It’s incredible that you can stay in a career this long and still have people put up with you. I wish they did that at home.”
Her appearance was called the highlight of the evening as she is one of the most beloved figures in show business. And having such an impressive career comes with an equally impressive bank account.

White was awarded the Guinness World Record in 2014 for the “Longest TV Career for an Entertainer,” and her efforts have certainly paid off as she has an estimated net worth of $75 million.
The funny lady first appeared on television in 1939 when she danced the Merry Widow Waltz in an experimental show based in Los Angeles. She then began working in radio on different programs before getting her own appropriately titled The Betty White Show.
In 1949, she returned to TV to co-host a live daily variety show with Al Jarvis and by 1951, she earned an Emmy nomination. In 1953, she starred in her first sitcom called Life with Elizabeth. She continued to work on many other projects throughout the ’50s and ’60s, but one of her most notable roles came in the ’70s as Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
The actress went on to star in another popular sitcom The Golden Girls and later Hot in Cleveland. The latter show ran for six seasons from 2010 to 2015 and White earned $75,000 per episode. She also authored several books including Betty White: In Person and Here We Go Again: My Life in Television.
Over the years she was featured on many games shows such as What’s My Line?, To Tell the Truth, I’ve Got a Secret, Match Game, and Pyramid.
White is an animal lover as well and has worked with the Los Angeles Zoo for more than 40 years. She previously said that if she wasn’t in show business she would have been a zookeeper.
