Anton du Beke jumps out of Susannah Constantine's dress during first Strictly Come Dancing performance

Susannah Constantine and Anton du Beke’s performance was one of the most talked-about moments of the first Strictly Come Dancing live show.

TV presenter Susannah, 56, chatted to Tess Daly with a large pineapple on her head (yes, that really did happen) before the pair performed an extravagant Samba.

We were left a little confused when the routine began, due to the fact that Anton was nowhere to be seen.

But it turned out he was hiding beneath Susannah’s giant dress. Where else?

After the Strictly professional popped out from beneath the skirt – wielding a pair of maracas, no less – Susannah’s OTT outfit was hoisted away to reveal a more practical dancing outfit.

Twitter wasn’t quite sure what to think.

Comments included: “John Sergeant you’ve been usurped,” and: “I am not drunk enough for this Samba from Anton and Susannah.”

However, others thought the dance injected a bit of fun into the evening’s proceedings.

One viewer tweeted: “Susannah’s dance was entertaining and fun. I think she’ll improve, and I loved Anton’s frilly flares.”

Another wrote: “No idea what was going on there but it can only getting better! Susannah kept it together and looked like she had fun at least!”

Unfortunately, judge Craig Revel Horwood wasn’t so complimentary.

He awarded the pair a score of one, saying it looked like they were “staggering about lost and drunk at a party”. Ouch. Maybe he used up all his compliments on Danny John-Jules?

The rest of the panel was a little kinder. Shirley Ballas gave them a three, while Darcey Bussell and Bruno Tonioli awarded them a four.

Strictly Come Dancing airs on BBC One.
