Ann Widdecombe ‘blanks’ Susanna Reid after heated debate over ‘trivial’ feminism

Ann Widdecombe blanked Susanna Reid as she said goodbye after a heated debate on Good Morning Britain.

The former MP got pretty heated in her discussion with Lesley Garrett, as they discussed whether boys’ choirs such as King’s College Choir in Cambridge should admit girls, a subject on which the two women fiercely disagreed.

Lesley believed the choir should accept girls, as there is an "education issue" with the connected schools offering scholarships to those who sing, whereas Ann believed women have "already won the battle" of feminism and should be focusing on less "trivial" issues.

But at the end of the segment, Susanna wished Ann a happy Christmas as they signed off, but Ann clearly did not fully realise what was being said and did not reply.

Susanna joked: "Oh right, by Ann…"

Lesley joined in her joke, as she and Ben Shephard laughed at Ann’s refusal to wish the GMB host a merry Christmas at the same time.

In the debate, Ann told Lesley: "Quite honestly I think we’ve won the battle – not only, as you’ve pointed out, is a woman the Prime Minister, we have a a woman head of the judicial, a woman head of the Metropolitan Police, but now we’re looking for more causes which have become trivial.

"There are plenty of places which we should be looking… there are lots of things that we could be looking at which are serious."

But Lesley strongly disagreed, jumping in to give Ann a piece of her mind.

Lesley replied: "It’s not trivial, all these subjects are serious… it starts with the detail, with the fact that unconsciously, if you see an all boys’ choir, that makes people think that’s the only way you can get into that.

"It’s about role-modelling and perception."

But Ann believed that while some change is good, she thought women were "looking for grievances" as she declared: "Oh, for heaven’s sake!"

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
