A NEW innovation could spell the end for the one-bag-only hand luggage policy on airlines.

A team of students from the University of Hong Kong have created a pop-up drawer in the floor under aircraft seats.

The private stowage compartment is designed to squeeze more space out of an aircraft — and could eventually become a standard feature in Airbus aircraft.

The compartments could also mean passengers no longer have to climb over others to access items like laptops and handbags that have to be stowed during take-off and landing.

The concept was named the winner of Airbus’ annual Fly Your Ideas competition in Toulouse this week, earning the design team £35,000 in prize money.

A statement issued by Airbus said: “The judges were impressed in seeing such a simple but effective solution for improved passenger experience”.

“The new aircraft cabin design fully uses the space between the cabin floor and the cargo ceiling to give passengers their own personal luggage space.”

The design was among 365 entries that were whittled down to a shortlist of five.

Runners up were a Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology team, who devised a plan to turn a commercial freight aircraft into a firefighting machine.
