Maldives authorities issue travel warning for holidaymakers to take 'extra caution' after five tourists drown in two weeks

Tourism officials are to conduct investigations into the safety of tourist facilities and hotels following the incidents.

According to the Maldives Times, police have issued the warning because "currents are strong during the north-eastern monsoon".

Earlier this month, Filipino newlyweds Leomar Lagradilla, 30, and Erika Joyce, 29, were on their honeymoon when they died while snorkelling.

An 84-year-old man from the Czech Republic and a 66-year old South Korean tourist both drowned last week, followed by the death of a 40-year-old Russian woman during a diving trip on Sunday.

Investigations have been launched into the deaths of the tourists.

The tourism ministry is currently identifying safe zones for water activities as well as tourist police officers stationed on the islands to monitor people in the water.

Maldives Tourism Minister Ali Waheed said:  "We have decided to inspect all tourist facilities in the Maldives within the next six to eight months.

"Regular monitoring must be done to ensure that regulations are followed."

The inspection will be conducted along with the Maldives Police Service and the Maldives National Defence Force, and will look into modernising previous regulations to ensure the safety of guests.

The current travel advice from the UK Foreign Office warns Brits of the risk in the Maldives.

It states: "The sea around the Maldives can have strong tidal currents and a number of foreign nationals drown every year.

"You should always take local advice before entering the sea."

Anyone caught in a rip current should avoid fighting it and swim parallel to the shore for at least 50 metres before swimming back to the beach.

More than 57,000 Brits travelled to the Maldives in the first half of 2018, up by 11.2 per cent compared to 2017, with most visits trouble-free.

Earlier this month, a huge fire ripped through a luxury resort in the Maldives.

Gili Lankanfushi, which has previously been voted number one in the world, saw a number of villas and restaurants destroyed following the blaze.

Thankfully all guests and staff were accounted for with minor injuries reported.
