Make merry at these holiday-themed pop-up bars and restaurants

The holiday season is always a festive time.

But many hotels, restaurants and other venues around the country are trying to make it even more so by creating temporary experiences called pop-ups. From specialty cocktails to winter dishes to fun activities, these pop-ups have something for everyone. Some even have temporary ice huts and antler-wearing llamas.

Here are a few examples of holiday pop-ups in various cities:

PHD Terrace, the year-round rooftop at the Dream Midtown hotel in New York, has launched Midwinter Night’s Dream, open to the public all winter long. It’s a play on Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The entire rooftop has been transformed into a European garden, with a floor-to-ceiling swing, tunnels flooded with twinkling lights, and mistletoe-adorned bars. Cocktails include an $18 S’mores Tini with crème de cacao, graham cracker crumbs, and three jumbo marshmallows roasted table-side.

The Arlo NoMad and Arlo SoHo hotels in New York City have created the Arlo Arctica pop-up to transport guests and locals to early 1900s Antarctica. The hotels have partnered with Shackleton Whisky to create specialty cocktails such as the $12 Royds Toddy with whisky, earl grey tea, lemon and cloves. The hotels also partnered with Symmetry Labs to create a lighting show. The Arlo courtyards also feature ice huts, ice sculptures and LED lighting installations.

The outdoor Plaza at MGM Springfield in Massachusetts has a pop-up Kringle’s Christmas Emporium with twinkling lights, holiday music and a marketplace. Hot chocolate and adult milkshakes are available.
