Snapchat accused of racism over ‘Jewtropolis’ row after map service is hacked

Eagle-eyed users of popular apps like Snapchat were stunned to notice that a New York neighbourhood has been changed to a racial slur – sparking outrage on social media.

Users noticed that Manhattan is now listed as ‘Jewtropolis’ on the app – as well as other online services such as CitiBike and StreetEasy that may use the same mapping service, Mapbox.

The row emerged as some spotted that an estate agent listing an apartment in Brooklyn next to a map that included the racial slur.

One person wrote on Twitter : "Since when is New York ‘Jewtropolis;".

Another person shared a screenshot of the apartment listing and wrote: "Couldn’t find a way to report directly to @streeteasy or @zillow or @openstreetmap so here’s a screen shot of a condo located in "Jewtropolis".

"Assuming they’ve been hacked. Might want to get on that and fix it. #Antisemitic"

But the same issue has affected other platforms too, including Snapchat, with another person posting "Snapchat why is nyu labled ‘Jewtropolis’? Is it a joke because it’s not funny it’s anti-Semitic."

Snapchat support commented on a tweet: "Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Snap Map relies on third party mapping data which has unfortunately been subject to vandalism.

"We are working with our partner Mapbox to get this fixed immediately."

The Mirror has contacted Snapchat for comment.
