Nokia’s retro 8110 ‘banana phone’ goes on sale next week

Lovers of 90s nostalgia will be pleased to hear that Nokia’s famous ‘banana phone’ is making a comeback next week.

The revamped Nokia 8110 will go on sale on Wednesday 15 August and is available to pre-order now with a bargain price tag of just £69.99.

The handset sports an updated version of the distinctive slider design, made famous in 90s sci-fi film The Matrix.

The original phone first went on sale in 1996.

The easy-to-use interface allows you to slide to start or end calls and buyers can choose between a yellow or black handset.

Over a third of us still owns a classic 90s gadget, according to a survey carried out by Nokia to celebrate the return of the retro phone.

Meanwhile, 20% of respondents agreed that the best thing to make comeback from the 90s right now is the Nokia 8110.

However, it was music that was deemed to be the best thing about the 90s- the decade that gave us the Macarena, Livin’ La Vida Loca and Barbie Girl – nabbing 36% of the vote.

When asked who should triumph in the classic 90s indie showdown, the participants voted overwhelmingly for Oasis over Blur.

An updated version of the 90s-tinged Nokia 8110 was first revealed at earlier this year at the Mobile World Congress tech trade show.

The Nokia phone brand is now licensed to Finnish firm HMD Global, which also brought back the popular Nokia 3310 in 2017.

The Nokia 8110 can be pre-ordered now from Carphone Warehouse, EE, O2, Vodafone and other key retailers.
