Wrexham manager Sam Ricketts told to stay away from his team’s OWN game amid speculation linking him with Shrewsbury

The former Wales defender is said to be "close" to taking over at the League One side.

Wrexham take on League Two outfit Newport in the FA Cup second round tie at the Racecourse ground tonight.

Struggling Shrewsbury have been without a manager since they sacked John Askey earlier this month.

Ricketts, 37, has led the Welsh side to third in the Vanarama National League after taking over in May.

A statement from Wrexham said: "In view of the speculation surrounding the future of our first team manager Sam Ricketts, Wrexham AFC felt it is not appropriate for him to attend this evening's game.

"We will seek to clarify Sam's future as Wrexham AFC manager as soon as is possible.

"Graham Barrow, Jussi Jaaskelainen and Carl Darlington will take charge of tonight's second round tie."

Shrewsbury have previously been linked with Newport manager Mike Flynn.

Former Hull, Swansea and Wolves star Ricketts earlier this month said he had not been contacted over the Shrewsbury gig.

He insisted: "No one's phoned me basically. I'll say it again. It's me doing my job. If I'm not doing my job no one rings me.

"The people who run the club are fantastic and I have a great relationship with them. I'm sure if anyone phoned them they would tell me.

"I'm very happy here. What we've done so far this season is built a really solid start and all we're trying to do every day is trying to improve.

"My job is to get this club as high as we can in the football structure, both on and off the pitch.

"Discussions are going on every day about how we keep improving. That is my biggest thing, we will keep improving."
