Wilfried Zaha is right to call out Premier League referees, say ex-Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison

Watford got stuck into Zaha last month and despite scoring the winner against Huddersfield on Saturday, was on the receiving end of some brutal tackles from Terriers defender Mathias Jorgensen.

The 25-year-old Eagles flyer claims he feels as if he has to get his “leg broken for anyone to get a card” and Morrison is in total agreement.

He exclusively told SunSport: “Wilf is 100 per cent right to complain, I’ve been to most of the Palace games this season and I can see why he is getting frustrated.

“The challenge on him at Watford was disgusting, the player raked his boot down the back of his calf and could have seriously injured him.

“I can see Wilf’s frustration and I understand why he wants more protection from referees.

“But he has to realise he is one of the best players around so he will get special treatment, but he does need more protection as you don’t want the top players targeted like that and picking up bad injuries."

Zaha is the most fouled player in the Premier League since the start of the 2016/17 campaign, and Morrison thinks it vital the top flight’s flair players are allowed to express themselves.

He added: “These special talents like Wilf and Eden Hazard, they are so good with the ball, they are always dribbling and running with the ball so they will get tackled more.

“The referees see it once and have to make a decision and we get replays, but I do believe he needs more protection.

“He’s an exciting talent and you don’t want to take that away from him, people pay to watch games and be entertained but if he keeps getting kicked like that, it’s only a matter of time before he gets a serious injury.

“I saw some saying ‘If you don’t like the rough and tumble then go and play abroad’, I can’t agree with that.

“If he goes abroad he will still get targeted because he’s an exceptional player.

“I don’t want to change how English football is played, I love the Premier League but players like Wilf, Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne who run with the ball need protection.”
