The Manchester United striker took the chance to congratulate the Chelsea veteran after he announced his retirement earlier this week.
Rooney and Terry were rivals in the Premier League for 15 years, but spent nine years as team-mates for England.
The Old Trafford veteran shared a photograph of the pair together before a Premier League match to his Twitter page.
It was captioned: "My toughest opponent. Congratulations to John Terry on a brilliant career."
The 32-year-old has continued his career with MLS side DC United, but Terry decided to hang up his boots at the age of 37.
Terry won five Premier League titles and a Champions League title following his debut as a 17-year-old in October 1998.
And Rooney was not the only player to congratulate the defender after he announced the news on Instagram.
Fellow Chelsea legend Frank Lampard said: "It was an honour to walk alongside you at @chelseafc and see close up the sheer will and desire to be the best and also encourage the best from all around you.
"What a player, what a leader, what a career. A true GREAT."
And Ex-Premier League rival Jamie Carragher said: "The best centre back in @premierleague era in my eyes.
"Good luck in the future & next time keep your mates out of it!"
It has been suggested that the 37-year-old could now become Thierry Henry's assistant at Aston Villa.
