TJ Reid set to captain Kilkenny in 2019

The Kilkenny hurlers are set to be captained by TJ Reid for the 2019 season.

As reported by the Kilkenny People, the Cats will continue the tradition of the reigning senior club champions nominating the county skipper for the year ahead.

Ballyhale Shamrocks, who are preparing for the All-Ireland semi-final against Waterford side Ballygunner next month, have chosen the 2015 Hurler the Year to lead the men in black and amber. Reid will take over from Cillian Buckley, who led the side in 2018.

The 31-year-old is not likely to feature for the Cats until Ballyhale’s involvement in the All-Ireland club campaign ends. Should the Leinster club champions overcome Ballygunner on February 9, he will likely miss the entirety of Kilkenny’s National League campaign, with the All-Ireland club final taking place on St Patrick’s Day at Croke Park.

This will be the second time that Reid captained his county, having previously been nominated in 2010 when Brian Cody’s charges lost the All-Ireland final to Tipperary.

Regarded as one of the most lethal forwards in the game, Reid will be eager to balance the leadership role while focusing on his own performances throughout the season.
