Stade Francias academy starlet Nicolas Chauvin was playing in a contest against Bordeaux-Begles last weekend when he was on the receiving end of a heavy tackle in the fifth minute.
Reports claim that the teenager suffered an immediate cardiac and his pulse was re-established by emergency services on the field.
He was then rushed to a local hospital where an operation was carried out on his neck.
But Chauvin failed to recuperate from his injuries and the club confirmed he sadly passed away in hospital.
A statement confirmed that he died of "cervical trauma that resulted in cardiac arrest and cerebral anoxia."
It added: "It is with great sadness that the Stade Français Paris announces the death of Nicolas Chauvin, young hopeful of the club, who died tonight at CHU Pellegrin in Bordeaux.
"Following an accident at the Espoirs game in Bègles, Nicolas suffered a cervical trauma that resulted in cardiac arrest and cerebral anoxia.
"Today, all our thoughts are with the family of Nicolas to whom all the members of the club send their most sincere condolences.
"Stade Français Paris is in mourning."
The rugby world is in mourning over the loss with clubs and players sharing their grief.
Bath ace Freddie Burns said: "Thoughts with Nicolas Chauvin's family, friends and everyone @SFParisRugby at this time. No words."
Leicester Tigers' Guy Thompson added: "Hearing such horrific news, thoughts go out to everyone at @SFParisRugby & to Nicolas Chauvin's family & friends."
The incident comes just four months after French youngster Louis Fajfrowski died after suffering a heart attack in a game for Aurillac.
