Space Jam 2 announced with LeBron James taking over from Michael Jordan as lead and made by Black Panther director

Warner Bros announced today they are making a sequel to the movie 22 years after Michael Jordan starred in the original carton epic.

And Cleveland Cavaliers legend and LA Lakers star James, 33, will be playing small forward on the silverscreen with Bugs taking up the position of point guard.

Olympic gold medallist and four-time NBA MVP LeBron appears to be extremely excited.

He posted a snap on Instagram of the locker showing his place next to Bugs in a throwback to the Tune Squad locker room where it all began in 1996.

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler will be the movie’s producer, while HBO’s Random Acts Of Flyness creator Terence Nance is the director.

James told Hollywood Reporter: “The ‘Space Jam’ collaboration is so much more than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together and doing this movie. It’s so much bigger.

“I'd just love for kids to understand how empowered they can feel and how empowered they can be if they don't just give up on their dreams.”

James, who is believed to have earned £27m already this year and shocked the world when he left The Cavs for the Lakers in June, is now stranger to the movie business.

He got rave reviews for his performance in the Amy Schumer comedy Trainwreck.

The original Space Jam made £175m worldwide and with the film’s “I Believe I Can Fly” track by R Kelly becoming a chart-topping hit.

Now James and the producers will be hoping the latest instalment will smash those figures.

Although no official release date has been confirmed, it is believed it will hit cinemas in January 2021.
