Ryder Cup 2018: US team health scare with flu bug sweeping through camp ahead of tee-off

Watson admits being ‘exhausted’ and revealed most of his team-mates are ‘battling something’ with just 24 hours until the biggest team tournament in golf kicks off.

One of the Yanks’ key players is already struggling to speak with the effects of a virus which struck at last week’s Tour Championship in Atlanta.

Watson said: “You can tell, my voice, I'm exhausted. A lot of us were kind of getting sick — gosh, I don't want to say not quite half the field had something, and then you know, traveling all the way over here, we're all battling something.

“You know, it kind of started through the locker room last week — there's only 30 guys. So I just happened to get it. I've got a weak immune system.”

American team doctors will be closely monitoring one of their biggest stars in a bid to patch him up ready to partner Webb Simpson in Friday afternoon’s foursomes.

Watson did manage to jokes: “I couldn’t care less about them. I'm trying to get me healthy.”

Meanwhile, Sergio Garcia has vowed to win the Ryder Cup for murdered golf star Celia Barquin Arozamena.

The European captain said: “We’re obviously touched by her death because it’s disappointing to see something like that, but to someone like her even more.

“Hopefully we can make sure that the family are proud of what we are doing for her.”
