Rex Ryan possibility for Chiefs as they fire defensive coordinator

Bob Sutton is predictably out, fired two days after his defense collapsed in an AFC Championship game loss to the Patriots. His potential replacement isn’t nearly as predictable.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported former Jets and Bills coach Rex Ryan is a name to watch for to replace Sutton, and he has been approached by other teams in past offseasons about defensive coordinator openings. Ryan has been Schefter’s colleague at ESPN since parting way with the Bills two seasons ago.

Ryan, who served as the Bengals (1996-97), Chiefs (1999) and Ravens (2005-08) defensive coordinator, didn’t dismiss the possibility of returning to the NFL as a defensive coordinator when asked at this time last year.

“I am never going to say I wouldn’t,” he told The Post’s Justin Terranova. “I am not going to paint myself in a corner and say I absolutely would not do that, but at this time I am going to say I don’t think so. That may drastically change, but right now I don’t see that.”

The Chiefs’ defense allowed 524 yards of total offense against the Patriots, and failed to stop them in overtime. The unit was 31st in the league in total defense this year and allowed 26.3 points per game, which was the eighth-highest figure in the league.

“I’ve said before that change can be a good thing, for both parties, and I believe that is the case here for the Chiefs and Bob,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said in a statement.
