Pep Guardiola claims his biggest challenge in England has been knocking Manchester United off their perch

The City manager is an old friend of legendary former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

And it was Fergie who used the phrase about Liverpool when he first took over at Old Trafford — and set about breaking down the Merseysiders’ domination of English football.

Pep revealed United’s two decades of success made him even more determined to edge ahead of them.

The Etihad chief told the Amazon Prime documentary All or Nothing that was his chief aim.

He said: “We have neighbours who, for 15 or 20 years, have always won.

"With Alex Ferguson they won every season.

“I think that my biggest challenge as a manager is to change that.”

City left United trailing last year as they stormed to the title — finishing a whopping 19 points above their second-placed rivals.

Telling his players to dominate for a long period, as United and Liverpool have done before, Pep said: “Making history is in front of our eyes. My advice — don’t drop it. Keep it.”
