Paul Pogba can become a legendary Manchester United captain like Roy Keane, insists Wes Brown

And he says the French World Cup winner can be Manchester United’s new Captain Marvel.

The Old Trafford boss and his £89million club record signing are at loggerheads, with Pogba admitting he would probably be fined if he speaks his mind in public.

Despite the ongoing hostility, the midfielder, 25, was handed the armband by Mourinho and scored in Friday’s 2-1 win over Leicester.

And Brown, 38, believes Pogba can improve and replicate legendary former skippers Bryan Robson and Roy Keane.

Brown, winner of two Champions Leagues with United, said: "It was definitely a good move to make Pogba captain.

"He’s still young but he had a really good World Cup and has the stature to do it.

"He put in a real captain’s performance on Friday and looks like he wants to really play well this season and do it week in week out.

"Pogba can be United captain and, hopefully, he takes that and does even better with it.

"If he can make that permanent, that’s a great achievement in itself."

Mourinho has moaned throughout the summer at the lack of new signings, downplaying his side’s chances of competing with Manchester City.

But Brown is adamant the Portuguese knows full well he has the quality in his squad to take City on.

He added: "What he has said is just him messing about, of course he thinks United can challenge.

"They were second last year and it’s got better and better under him. That’s all you can ask for."

Wes Brown was speaking at a McDonald’s & FA Community Football Day. These football days take place across the UK this summer, giving thousands of children the chance to enjoy the beautiful game. www.mcdonalds.co.uk/communityfootballdays
