Paraic Fanning’s Waterford reign off to a winning start

Waterford’s 2019 campaign got off to the perfect start on Wednesday night with a six-point victory over Cork in Mallow, 1-24 to 1-18.

Thirteen points from Stephen Bennett and a goal from Michael ‘Brick’ Walsh, who enters his 17th season with the Deise seniors, helped seal the win for Paraic Fanning’s charges.

Although Cork led by two points at half-time, Waterford countered in the second half to take the spoils.

Both managers played strong sides at the north Cork venue, as they look ahead to later in the year. John Meyler will be aiming to build his squad, with many of last year’s Munster U21 winning side eager to impress. Following Derek McGrath’s departure last season, the 2017 All-Ireland finalists will feel they need to build momentum in the coming months ahead of the Munster Championship.

Waterford host Clare on Sunday in Fraher Field, with a place in the decider on the line. The winner will face Tipperary in the final, should the Premier overcome Kerry on Saturday.

The loss means Cork’s interest in the pre-season competition is now over, as they prepare for their National League opener away to Kilkenny later this month. Meanwhile, Waterford will compete in Division 1B after being relegated last year, and open against Offaly.
