Nike makes runner Justin Gallegos first athlete with cerebral palsy to sign pro contract

Justin Gallegos made history this past week when he signed a three-year running contract with Nike, becoming the first professional athlete with cerebral palsy to do so. 

Nike ended up surprising Gallegos, a junior at Oregon, after a recent practice for the university's run club. Nike's insight director, John Douglass, showed up at the practice to deliver the contract in person.

Elevation 0m released a video Saturday — on World Cerebral Palsy Day —commemorating Gallegos' historic moment and capturing his raw emotions when he gets the good news. 

"Growing up with a disability, the thought of becoming a professional athlete is…like the thought of climbing Mt. Everest," Gallegos wrote in an Instagram post earlier this week. "Hundreds of miles, blood, sweat, and tears has lead me here along with a few permanent scars."
