NFL rebel and Nike ambassador Colin Kaepernick applies for trademark of a black and white image of his own head

The former NFL quarterback was ousted from the league following a series of protests over the Black Lives Matter movement.

The image features Kaepernick's head and shoulders with his trademark Afro and beard.

According to ESPN, his commercial team intend to use it on items such as shampoo, lampshades and other merchandise.

The paperwork filed to the US Patent and Trademark Office also claims the image will be used to provide: "classes, workshops, seminars and camps in the field of self empowerment and awareness to properly interact with law enforcement"

It could also be used in association with: "production of television shows and films."

The 30-year-old has become a beacon of solidarity for his protests during the American national anthem.

But his actions sparked a huge backlash in the US as well, angering patriotic NFL fans who claimed he disrespected the flag.

Kaepernick has cashed in with a huge Nike ad campaign as well, featuring his face in black and white.

Across his face is the message: "Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything."

The campaign got the attention of the White House, while Nike customers burned trainers in protest.
